October 7, LONDON, ONTARIO – Damian Warner’s Olympic Gold medal performance has been captured in an amazing pencil sketch by London, ON artist, Dan Pietens. Warner and Pietens were Montcalm High school classmates and played junior and senior basketball together for the Cougars. It is an unbelievable coincidence that the Greatest Athlete and arguably one of the greatest pencil sketch artists in the world, attended the same high school, at the same time, in London, ON.
Warner, who’s spectacular accomplishments will now be recognized with his induction onto Canada’s Walk of Fame in December said, “I definitely remember Dan from high school and always appreciated and respected his incredible artistic talents. This drawing of me, which has combined my image from the podium and the end of the race, looks like a photograph. You need to see the time lapse to believe he actually drew it.”
“We all remember Damian from high school, and like the rest of us, I have enjoyed following his incredible athletic career”, said Pietens. “It was an honor to work with such an athletic talent and, more importantly, such a great person.”
The drawing took Pietens over 35 hours to complete. “The medal alone was an 8-hour session, but I wanted to get it right”. In the foreground, Pietens has captured what has been dubbed the “last man standing” at the end of the final event of the decathlon.
Pietens’ work, which has focused on NHL players, has been featured on numerous sports outlets and covered by the NHL and NHL Alumni Association, as well as social media posts by many of his subjects. His recent works have included Logan Couture, Drew Doughty, Bo Horvat, Nick Suzuki, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, Eric Lindros and a host of other stars. Many of the NHL players will also be doing a limited edition signed series. Pietens summed it up best, “Although my focus has been NHL players, it is fitting that the launch of the limited edition signed series is with my friend, classmate and teammate from high school…who just happens to be the greatest athlete.”
Proceeds of the sale of the limited-edition prints will go to support the next generation of Damian Warners through KidSport.
Bill Smith, Executive Director of KidSport London was ecstatic when he got the news. “With the COVID-19 situation for over 16 months, children have not been allowed to play any sports. Thanks to Damian Warner and Dan Pietens, KidSport London will have the much-needed funding to help the families that will apply this year.”
“Community-based organized sport is beginning to return and we at KidSport London are expecting an increase in the number of applications from families for financial support. Thanks to Damian and Dan,
we will be able to fulfill the dreams of these kids and young people and get them involved in a season of
